Dear Families,
It's hard to believe that we just finished our first full week of 3rd Grade! We are continuing to build our community each day. We came up with our list of classroom expectations. They're a list of qualities the students thought would help to make our year together successful.
In Room 24 We Believe In...
We took a district literacy and math assessment this week. It is a computerized assessment and it is used to get a quick snapshot of each students' reading and math knowledge. This was one of the first computerized assessments for these kids students and they persevered right through! We talked about how to log into the computer, move the mouse, and type in answers. Our keyboarding practice is paying off! Teachers will use this data to inform our instruction.
We also had our first Farm to School lesson with Miss Jenny. We learned about our 5 food groups and danced to a fun song called "Five Alive". We then got to taste two different delicious dressings that are now part of our cafeteria salad bar. Two thumbs up!!
Ps. Miss Jenny said we were the best class she worked with all week. We have a room of wonderful and inquisitive listeners!! That's how I feel each and every day. I appreciate each and every one of your learners and feel lucky getting to know them all!
Math
In math this week we practiced counting by tens to 1,000. We have discussed the different models used in multiplication (pictures, arrays, ratio tables and loops and groups). We've been coming up with multiplication equations and making sure to include a PRODUCT (answer to multiplication problem) with each. We've been working on our double digit addition and looked at subtraction story problems.
Reading
This week during Readers' Workshop the students continued to build their reading stamina! We read for 30 minutes!! Wow! We continued to build strategies for reading tricky words. We know that if we come to a tricky word, we should "roll up our sleeves" and try several strategies. These include: checking the picture, using the context of the story, looking through the whole word, looking for smaller words inside big words, rereading to make sure it sounds right, and thinking about different vowel team sounds. We also continue to build our "snap word" knowledge on our word wall. We discovered that even in tricky words, there are often snap parts! Prefixes and suffixes are often read in a snap!
We've continued our read aloud A Snicker of Magic. Felicity is feeling settled in Midnight Gulch and finally has someone in her life that she can call a friend. The students are really enjoying the story -- ask them about it!
Science
We started our Force and Motion unit on Friday. Students were given a challenge to create a zip line! We talked about words like Friction and how that hinders (or helps) the speed of the zip line carrier. We also discussed what Center of Gravity means. We will continue our study during Library next week.
A few reminders....
Students get to enjoy a healthy snack each morning. If your student needs a snack from school please let me know-- we have busy mornings and a quick snack helps to get our energy back up for Math!
Please send in a pair of head phones or ear buds with your students to use during our Chromebook times. These should stay at school. They can be found at the dollar store or typically for pretty cheap at a grocery store!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Deirdre Phalon
