Dear Families,
There has been a lot of excitement at Orchard school this week- with the Harvest Festival happening tonight (5:30 - 7:30) and the CIRCUS beginning next week students, have been gearing up with many fun activities.
On Wednesday, our class joined Mrs. Fischer's 2nd graders and headed out to the garden. There, Mrs. McQuillen led us in harvesting over 330 sweet potatoes! It was amazing for the students to see that right out our classroom door, in a the small school garden, incredible veggies are growing! We sorted the potatoes into tens frames to count them and then the 3rd graders got to set up washing stations to get the sweet potatoes all cleaned up. Mrs. Vachereaus' 4th graders will be doing the chopping so that they're ready to cook with for the Festival!
Math
This week students have been practicing adding 10's to different numbers. We've noticed that when we add tens, the ones place stays the same. Students were used to counting by 10's "10, 20, 30, 40 ...." but we noticed that you can start at any number and do the same thing! "34, 44, 54, 64, 74...."
Students also practiced with the multiplication models from our calendar. They were given an expression, 6x2, and were then asked to draw a model go with it.

You may be saying to yourself that some of this math seems to be too easy for your student. The first unit of math is a lot of review from 2nd grade material. As the units progress you will start to see more growth and deeper concepts!

Science
Our 3rd grade scientists explored more with friction and gravitational pull this week. We created oscillating birds during Library. The friction where the rubber meets the straws keeps the bird from dropping. In fact, some materials have greater friction than others, and rubber is near the top of the list for having lots of friction.
Once we start shaking the weight (the bird), it bounces up and then the gravitation pull and momentum cause it to bob down the string.
We also created balancing acrobats. Students had to experiment with different materials to see what would help their tight rope walker balance best on the fishing line.

Literacy
In writing we began our Small Moments. Students used the list of important people/memories that they created last week to start writing their first draft of our personal narratives. We talked about how authors "show not tell."
For example
Telling: "I went outside and played with a friend. Then we came back in and ate dinner."
Showing: "The wind ran through my air as my friend Anna pushed me on the swing. "It's time for dinner!" I heard my mother call. I propelled myself from the swing and we hurried inside."
This is a tricky topic and will take a lot of practice! But the authors in room 24 have been doing an excellent job so far!
