Dear Families,
WOW, what a whirlwind week!! I hope that everyone enjoyed the circus, it was so rewarding to see how proud the students were of their accomplishments. We talked about how brave they were to be performing a skill they had only a week to practice. Troy Wunderle put on an encore performance for the whole school this morning. He amazed us by balancing a ladder on his CHIN, walking on stilts, balancing on a roller board WHILE juggling and even had a few magic tricks! A very memorable experience.
Math
This week in math we continued our pumpkin measurements. Students found the circumference and height of their pumpkin in centimeters and then graphed it on a scatter plot. We noticed that the pumpkin with the greatest height had the smallest circumference and that 7/15 pumpkins had a circumference between 70 - 80 centimeters.
We continued collecting milliliters of water this week. We are now up to 2 liters or 2,000 mL.
Students also worked closely with arrays. Noticing patterns and had practice writing both multiplication and repeated addition equations to match.
A letter on our next unit of multiplication went home with your student on Thursday.
Writing
Since the presidential election is a major topic of discussion, we have been talking about the election process and how much work each candidate goes through in order to become our next president. We read a book called "I Can Be President, Too!" where students of all ages across the country described why they would make a good president. Students then wrote their own reasons why they'd make a good president. We discussed qualities that we thought it would be important for a president to possess: Honest, Generous, Fair, Friendly, Respectful, Responsible, Peaceful, Organized, and many others. Students decided on what trait they possessed and then came up with three supporting facts/examples. We have created a wall of future presidents in the hallway. These 3rd graders have my vote! Ask your child what they thought their best quality for president would be.
Science
To stay on our pumpkin topic, students explored the life cycle of pumpkin this week. We learned that the stages are...
Now that the circus is over, our schedule will get back to its typical routine. I think we're all ready to settle back into our consistent days in Room 24.
A few reminders...
Thank you!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Deirdre Phalon
